Most homeowners have no idea what's happening inside their attic ductwork. The system runs, the air blows, and life goes on - until something feels off. Rooms that won't cool down. A musty smell you can't pin down. Energy bills creeping up for no obvious reason. These are the signs that something is wrong where you can't see it.
When we get up into an attic and start pulling back the insulation, this is the kind of thing we find more often than you'd think. Flexible duct lines that have been crushed, kinked, or worn completely through. Foil layers torn open, insulation hanging out, and in some cases the inner liner fully collapsed - meaning conditioned air is dumping straight into the attic instead of reaching the rooms you're trying to heat or cool. That's not a minor issue. That's your system working overtime for almost nothing.
Duct damage like this happens gradually. Age, heat stress, pests, and poor original installation all play a role. By the time symptoms show up inside the house, the damage has usually been building for a while. That's why a thorough inspection matters - not just a quick look from the access hatch, but actually getting in there and tracing each run.
What we look for goes beyond the obvious tears. Crushed flex duct restricts airflow almost as badly as a full breach. Deteriorated duct wrap loses its insulating value, which means your conditioned air is picking up heat or cold from the attic before it ever reaches the vent. Disconnected or collapsed inner liners are among the worst - because the air is moving, your system thinks it's working, but the delivery is completely compromised. Our ductwork repair and replacement work addresses all of it, not just the easy stuff.
If your home has rooms that never seem to get comfortable, or your system runs constantly without catching up, the ductwork is one of the first places we look. A lot of times, that's exactly where the answer is hiding.
